Second, he was appointed to the Judicial Nominating Commission for Miami-Dade County Court System by Governor Lawton Chiles, where he served as Chairman of that commission. His duties were to submit names to the Governor for the appointment of Judges. In his most recent appointment, Governor Charlie Christ appointed Attorney Handfield to the position of State Commissioner to the Statewide Ethics Commission for the State of Florida. His duties are to review matters regarding misconduct involving elected and appointed state and local officials.
Attorney Handfield is the immediate past Chairman of the Public Health Trust, which oversees the operation of Jackson Memorial Health System, where he oversaw a budget of $2.5 Billion annually and signed the check for more than 13,000 employees. Jackson Health System is the largest public Hospital in the nation.
Additionally, Attorney Handfield was the first Chairman of the newly established City of Miami Police Oversight Board, where his job was to investigate police misconduct and provide police oversight. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Bethune-Cookman University. Attorney Handfield honors are too many to name. However, on May 2nd, 2004, Bethune-Cookman University honored Attorney Handfield by naming its newly erected music building the Dr. Larry R. Handfield Music Building. And in 2008, the Board of Trustee voted to name its new one hundred and fifty thousand square foot Football Training Center the Dr. Larry R. Handfield Football Training Center. Next month, Attorney Handfield, will become the first graduate to be appointed Chairman of the Board of Bethune-Cookman University, in the 106 year history of the institution.
Additionally, he received a national recognition from the National Coalition of Christians and Jews, with the Silver Medallion Award for outstanding service to our community, for improving health care, and improving police oversight.
